Art
and the Spiritual explores ways in which material objects can serve as conduits
to immaterial realms of experience. The exhibition will explore the
nature of belief, faith, ritual, and aesthetics through a wide range
of artifacts and art objects juxtaposed to provoke cross-cultural and
trans-historical comparisons. The works derive from different contexts—secular
and religious, western and non-western, contemporary and historical.
A Catalogue in Search of its Authors All visitors to the exhibition, as well as online visitors to the Foundation’s website, will be invited to contribute to the interpretation of objects in the exhibition. Drawing on their own experiences and insights, visitors will be invited to share their responses to the works on view and the environment created by the Pulitzer’s elegant architecture. These responses will be compiled into a constantly expanding archive, selections of which will be made available online in the form of a web catalogue. Only once the show is finished will the catalogue be completed. The catalogue is a result of collaborative efforts with students from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
